We took a little detour on our way to the coast for a meeting and found Triangle Lake. What a quiet and beautiful place.

That is one beautiful sunset!
Last weekend, August 1st and 2nd, we had our coordinating council meetings in Medford and Eugene. It is such a pleasure to meet with the stake presidents and see their commitment to missionary work, on top of all else they are charged with. The vast majority of them are very committed to missionary work and are earnestly striving to know how they can do better. They are a great group of men to work with. I have been most fortunate that through my first year none of them have been released and none are scheduled to be released before June 2010.
This week we once again held our multi zone conferences. We had a stake president speak at each one of the conferences. I like it when one of them can arrange to come to the conferences and show the missionaries, by example, how committed they are to missionary work, and will remain so long after the missionaries are transferred and ultimately go home. Each of the stake presidents spoke on a subject of their choosing which tied in so well with what we had chosen to focus on. Sister Macdonald reminded all of us, that this is not about us, but rather we are here to do the Lord’s work and build his kingdom. In the morning I spoke about the importance of the Book of Mormon, why we read it, and what we can learn from it. The assistants held a wonderful work shop about teaching from the Book of Mormon and again used me as an investigator in the role play portion of their teaching. Both their workshop and my morning talk emphasized the need for having a personal testimony and our need to help our investigators gain a testimony too. In the afternoon I spoke about the need to have obedience become our quest and not an irritant. In the moment that happens we will be blessed with power from on high (quoting Pres. Benson). The missionaries seemed to go away charged up and more committed to do the work.
Once again we were able to count another blessing of serving in this beautiful area of Oregon and relatively close to home. We had more friends, the Sperrys, stop by here as they were traveling through. Their schedule allowed them to come to a portion of our Eugene zone conference and they told us it was a highlight of their trip. Now that either means they weren’t having that good of a time, or they really enjoyed seeing a zone conference for the first time, and realizing first hand what their sons experienced. We are delighted that good friends can stop by, and that they have never interfered with the work we are called to do.
To the parents of our missionaries reading this blog please know that we are parents too. This week we will be welcoming our son home from his mission. Of course, the welcoming of our son will be a little complicated as we will also be welcoming twelve new missionaries in that week including out friends from Orem, the Giles, to work in the office. We will also be sending home ten missionaries. So know we are feeling what you feel. We are so happy to be welcoming home a son who has worthily completed his mission, and yet we are a bit saddened that the wonderful experiences he has been having will be coming to a close. On top of that we will only get him for a few days and then he goes back to Orem to attend BYU. The circle of life is a glorious thing to watch and be a part of.
